Scavenger Hunt at Penrhyn Castle

Scavengar Hunt at Penrhyn Castle

by Moira Espinosa

Mountains

Ocean

Empty vines

Sense of senseless greed built into blood colored clay

Imprisoned in English architecture

Cobwebs and curved wood

Immortal screams carved into open-mouthed stairs

Eyes in every column corner

Beasts burdened with ceilings and

The poetry of children

The lie of a star-filled sky

Clouds behind glass and

Paintings of proud men

Sculpted slate circled by snakes

Bells named to beckon and

Proclamations of expectations

Sconces lighting sin and sorrow

Artistry paid for by the lifeblood of

Sugarcane captives

Practical grates twisted for aestheticity

A room staring at itself in the mirror

Reflecting

Endlessly
